Cenarion Hatchling: A Worthy Cause
A new mini-companion pet was recently added to the Blizzard pet store. A Cenarion Hatchling!
Quoted from the store: For every Cenarion Hatchling purchased between now and July 31, 100% of the $10 USD adoption fee will be donated to the American Red Cross's Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami relief efforts. Please note that you will not receive a donation receipt for tax purposes for this donation.
Points of Conflict across the Community
Currently there are various viewpoints on whether or not this is a good thing. There are the people that are loudly complaining about the loss of originality of their TCG loot card hatchling. Others are pointing fingers at the buyers saying that their 'donation' is less then honest and pure. Many are eyeing Blizzard with a look of anger because they believe the pet is a crappy PR stunt meant to cover up the upcoming sale of an expensive, non-charity item; the flying lion mount.
The Truth of the Matter
Personally I am happy that Blizzard is reaching forward to help out Japan. It's disgusting to read the various complaints about a player losing their special snowflake as a weighing factor to not buy this donation pet. That kind of person is not seeing the true point of what Blizzard is trying to do.
For cripes sake it doesn't matter if people bought the pet instead of straight out donating. The pet does not stop a person from donating by other means. The act of buying the pet also does not lessen the good will brought forward by the community to help out people who are experiencing so much tragedy. It does not make a person insincere. What it is, is charity. A gesture of humanity to help those that lost so much in a blink of an eye. A symbol of hope to people that are still trying to put back together the pieces of their life.
The mock outrage of feelings at seeing a duplicate item in-game does not come anywhere near the terrible misfortune brought upon by the tsunami to the people of Japan. It doesn't compare at all. And I do hope that those that are complaining about the pet open their eyes to understand what it is that Blizzard is doing and how they are trying to lessen the suffering.
Seriously, there is no hidden motive. All Blizzard is doing is trying to help people out.
Thanks for reading!
Honestly, this is why I don't delve too deeply into the forums. There are valid complaints and then there's the usual spin doctors and skeptics.
ReplyDeleteI look at it as a good thing. Also, I can confirm the pet is a great Mother's Day gift (as my wife will find out on Sunday from my son).
It's both of those that really astound me. I guess it's all a matter of perspective.
ReplyDeleteCheers! What a wonderful idea to gift the pet to your wife. I bought two for hubby and myself. He tries not to admit he likes it but he sure loves to poke it often to hear the various chirps it makes.
