Through a Glass, Darkly - Boomkin Guide: Part One

Through a Glass, Darkly is part of a chain quest to obtain the legendary Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest. I will be splitting this guide into two parts. The first part of the guide will be regarding preparation and the second will be a short walk-through about the entire encounter.

For those that are heroic geared you will find this encounter slightly trivial but this Boomkin POV guide is mostly aimed toward players in a mix of T11/T12 gear. Hopefully a fellow Boomie can find something useful in this guide.

My main spec and playstyle is PVE restoration as a casual. Although I love shifting into my Boomkin offspec for dailies and whatnot I never truly had a firm grasp of DPSing as a moonkin. Until now. In my six years of playing World of Warcraft this particular quest rates high as one of the most individually frustrating experiences I have ever gone through. Mostly this is due to the fact that I had to nearly unlearn everything about my healing mentality. I'll briefly talk about how doing that helped me to finish this quest later on. At any rate, let's get ready to venture forth to the tools needed to accomplish this quest!

A Few Important Notes

First and foremost, the Through a Glass, Darkly quest must be done alone. If a player inside the instance brings in another to form a party it will kick both out. Should a player venture into the Nexus and clear a few mobs and then bring in a party member it will reset the instance. Even if you create the party before starting the quest it will not even let you inside the dungeon.

Another note is that a player also cannot be saved to the Eye of Eternity raid; AKA Malygos. This is because a player will be unable to click on the final quest objective to complete the quest after defeating the boss NPC dragon. If you are saved to this raid then you must wait for the soft rest before attempting the quest.

Preparation is key

Boomies, before heading to the Nexus you want to make sure to bring a good amount of consumables in your backpack such as:

Flask of Draconic Mind
Severed Sagefish Head

Extra consumables to give an edge to your performance is always a plus. I brought along a stack of runescrolls of fortitude along with healing potions.

Runescroll of Fortitude II
Mythical Healing Potion
Prismatic Elixir
Volcanic Potion

Let's Talk Specs

Nope, I'm not going to say there is a best spec for this encounter nor am I going to suggest res-speccing to something different from what you have already established. What I will say is that after countless wipes on certain adds in the instance I learned a few things the hard way. Mainly, I needed talents to help me kite, silence, and cause focused damage in a tight space of area. And so, this is a suggested spec that helped to finally complete the quest after multiple(35 to be exact) wipes.

31/2/8: This is the spec and glyphs(ignore the minors) I went with for this quest:

At first, a lot of these are standard boomkin spec. A lot of you will have them already but others are considered more PVP-ish and might not be in your spec. There are two particular talents and one glyph I can firmly state that made quite a difference. Here are those talents/glyph and also the reasoning as to why I chose them.

Fungal Growth and Gale Winds: There are three annoying adds through-out this quest. One mob that likes to silence, a second mob that hits like a truck and a third that does both. The extra damage added to the pushback to typhoon was definitely a life-saver during the final encounter. The slow effect to mushrooms helped immensely to control the adds from reaching my pristine feathery hide.

Solar Beam: I cannot stress taking this talent enough. The silence effect can be applied to a casted spell from Thyrinar, the final NPC boss.  Interupting his casts is key to surviving not to mention Solar Beam helps a ton on the smaller adds earlier in the instance as well.

Glyph of Focus: The damage boost to Starfall was invaluable. Although the instance itself is vast, the room you have to manuever around in is actually pretty tight.  At particular points in the instance a Boomie wants to use starfall on CD and be able to DPS down multiple adds at once without bringing the whole room upon yourself. This glyph gets the job done.

Macros and Addons

Whether your taste falls to using Need to Know, Squawk and Awe or some other addon such as Power Auras, the fact remains that a Boomkin needs to track their dots and CDs.  It's an absolute must during this instance so please do not go without one of these addons.

I'll admit that I am a macro-newbie therefore the ones I used for focus casting were the ones suggested in a sticky at the official forums. All credit for these macros goes to Eluial from the Korgath realm. The ones I've quoted below are the particular ones I found useful in Eluial's thread:

Focus Modifier DoTs
Casts DoTs as normal, unless you have a modifier button held. Then it will cast DoTs on your focus. Replace "moonfire" with "insect swarm" to do the same for IS.

#showtooltip
/cast [nomod] Moonfire; [mod, target=focus] Moonfire

Mushroom Spam

This lets you spam your keybind for mushrooms when you're trying to plant them. Keep spamming the button until you see the reticule again, drop, and spam again.

#showtooltip
/cast !Wild Mushroom

Solar Beam
This macro will interrupt your current cast and get your solar beam in when you needed.

#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/cast Solar Beam

Finally, with knowledge and tools in hand your Boomkin can begin the Through a Glass, Darkly quest. Believe in your boomkin, take some good luck, and above all; Have fun!
